And Fiji was the "honored guest nation." Why Fiji? Did they draw a name out of a hat? Or is someone getting a nice little kickback for that "robust and focused bilateral dialogue?" I'm just asking questions here.
Cooperation Agreements: Empty Promises?
So, they signed "numerous crucial cooperation agreements." Color me skeptical. How many of these agreements will actually lead to anything tangible? How many will end up gathering dust in some bureaucrat's filing cabinet? They say these agreements will "govern the future exchange of visitors." Govern? As if tourism can be centrally planned.
They appointed five "Chongqing Culture and Tourism Promotion Ambassadors." Seriously? Ambassadors? Sounds like a bad reality TV show. What qualifications do these people even have, besides a "pre-existing global reach and demonstrable affinity for the city"? Are they just Instagram influencers who got a free vacation?
Visa Headaches and Hot Pot
Okay, I'll give them some credit. They're addressing visa issues and payment systems. Making it easier for tourists to actually, you know, visit the place. But let's not pretend this is some revolutionary act of hospitality. It's the bare minimum they should be doing.
And they had "specialized policy briefings." Bet those were riveting. I can picture it now: endless PowerPoint slides about "enhancing the visitor experience." Maybe they should focus on, I don't know, cleaning up the air pollution before they start worrying about localized payment systems. I mean, what's the point of seeing Chongqing's sights if you can't breathe?

I just don't see it. I see a city trying too hard, spending too much money on PR, and not enough on actually making itself a desirable destination. I see a bunch of bureaucrats patting themselves on the back while the rest of the world scratches its head and wonders, "Chongqing? Why?"
